Indiana, USA—This composite image was created with a single camera and lens, fixated on a wide-angle, static portion of the sky for 100 minutes. It captured images periodically on Monday, April 8, 2024 between 2:16:25 p.m. and 3:56:25 p.m. During this time, Earth’s Moon gracefully passed through the frame, sliding in front of the Sun and causing a total solar eclipse, with maximum totality occurring at 3:06:25 p.m.

Captured with one of my 87-year-old grandfather’s pear trees beginning to bloom as the foreground subject, this photo carries extra special meaning to me. He won’t be around forever—much as we wish he could be—but the experience of sharing this total eclipse and the process of capturing this photo with him to see his excitement once the eclipse finished and the photo was ready, will be wonderful memories I’ll never forget. Total solar eclipses don’t come often either. I imagine it will be his first and likely his last, but the fact he was able to walk outside of the home he’s lived in most of his life, look up in awe, and see the fully-eclipsed Sun over trees he planted long ago—once as only tiny little sprouts in the ground—really bring me the greatest smile every time I see it.

I hope this print brings and this eclipse if you had the privilege to see it, the same joy when you look up and helps inspire you to do the same: keep looking up!

This total solar eclipse was visible within a narrow, winding, 3,000-mile-long band in North America: beginning in Mazatlán Mexico, tracing across the contiguous United States and concluding near Newfoundland, Canada at sunset.

Print: Created using the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer on Ultra Premium Luster Photo paper, these 17″ x 22″ (43 x 56 cm) limited-edition, autographed and numbered prints will arrive without any bezel or white border surrounding them. Once opened, the print will be tube-shipped and rolled inside a 17-1/4″ x 22-1/4″ 3-sided clear, plastic sleeve for archival keeping or protection before being framed.
